National Textile Center Article Thread Study
Purpose of The Study
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the usefulness of Article Threads and building a search-index based on Article Threads for the National Textile Center publications. These publications are PDF versions of print publications.
Each publication contains multiple articles. A sample quarterly publication is presented here, containing 49 separate articles which have been threaded and then populated with metadata. The following standard fields are populated for each Article Thread:
Title - The Thread Tile as listed in the Table of Contents
Author- The full author names, separated by commas and omitting institutions and positons.
Subject- The category that the article falls under
Keywords- The description of the article
How this PDF File will be used by PDF WebSearch
PDF WebSearch will extract the full-text of each Article and will index it as if it were a separate document. You will note that only the actual text of an Article has been threaded. Captions, background information on authors, etc. has been omitted. This adds to the relevance of search results because extraneous hits are eliminated.
The Title field of an article that is added to the search results list will be displayed with the index fields for that article. The values for Date and Description are best stored in custom fields with those names. This has not be done because we are still working on tools to define and create custom fields for Article Threads. The description is stored for now in the Keywords field, and the date value is not included.
All 49 articles fall into 5 categories. The value for the custom Category field is stored in the standard Subject field. This field will be used to create dynamic lists of articles for specific categories on the search results screen.
Clicking on an Article Title will open the PDF file to the first page on which the Article Thread occurs.
A PDF WebSearch toolbar under the Acrobat Reader Plug-in will permit searching of the active Article, searching of the PDF Document, or performing a Refine Search or New Search. This toolbar will also feature Next Results and Previous Results buttons to navigate the files on the Search Results List without returning to the list.
Displaying Article Threads in the Acrobat Browser Plug-in
In Acrobat Reader for the desktop, Article Threads are displayed in a pop-up windows. In the Browser Plug-in, they are displayed in the navigation pane on the left side of the viewer window.
There is no setting for opening the PDF file to display Articles initially. It is possible to set the Page Open on the first page to force the display of Article Threads, and this is what is done in this example. The user can now choose between Article Threads, Bookmarks and Thumbnails as navigation aids.
Just click an Article title in the navigation pane to jump into that Article Thread!
